Long time, no blog... this is it!

I know it has been a long time since I've written, mostly because all is well.  Ian and Shawn are leaving Thailand soon and Andy will be there on his own.  He has met a young lady and he seems very happy.

His plan is to return in April for two months in order to attend Nick's wedding in June.  He wants to stay in Thailand until after the New Year's celebration (when everyone throws water on each other).

We are watching flights but it just isn't time to book yet.  We'll need to wait until closer to the time to confirm dates.

It's been over a year (and this was a blog for a year).  I have settled into the fact that Andy is going to stay longer, perhaps a lot longer.  But I have survived!  I made it through the year.

Shingles (not for the roof)

It has been a while since I have posted, mostly because I'm still high from being in Thailand.  After going there I don't feel nearly as far away from Andy.

The latest news is that Andy has Shingles.  We spoke on Skype on a Saturday night and he had a rash starting.  The next day he went to school and the teachers took him to the doctor and was diagnosed with Shingles.  After some research I found that it is caused by the chicken pox virus being dormant in your body and from stress.  They gave him medicine which did help some.

His friend's family took him to a monk when  he wasn't getting better.  Apparently Shingles is a bit more intense in the Thailand climate and everyone wanted him to feel better.

I learned that the Buddhist monk he saw was old and seemed a little annoyed at first (coming in from hoeing his garden), which turned out to be just his demeanor.  He was warm and friendly, joking with them during the process.

He had holy water that he put in a bowl with small wax disks.  He took a bit of it in his mouth, prayed silently, and then spit (sprayed) it on Andy.  Andy said it startled him the first time but then the monk proceeded to do the same thing, on all the infected areas.  Andy was to drink the rest of the water.

Then he went out into the jungle and found a bunch of herbs for  Andy to take him, soak in water, drink the water and then put the herbs on his body for the week.  He returned daily for several days and got much better.

The teachers had recommended that he see a monk and were pleased that he actually did.  He said he felt much better.  There was no charge to see the monk but he did ask Andy to come back teach English for them.

This is reminding me more and more and Eat, Pray, Love!

What a trip!

Jody and I returned last weekend from a wonderful week in Thailand!  I documented our trip on a blog: http://thailandadventure2011.blogspot.com/.

Andy is so happy there!  He is mature, outgoing, personable, everything I want for him!

And I'm already planning when I can go back!

All my bags are packed and I'm ready to go!

Tomorrow is the big day!  My suitcase is packed.  My carry-on is almost packed.  My boarding passes and passport are with my netbook.  I just need to get up in the morning and finish a few last minute items.

Mollie, Kathy and I went out for margaritas tonight at Fiesta Chara to kick off my trip!  Here we are in our winter wear, knowing that I'll be in the intense heat in less than two days.

On a side note, a recent decision (based on various pieces of advice) I will be stocking up on snacks and bottled water in Detroit tomorrow so I have food for the flight between Tokyo and Bangkok.  I'm not sure it is the best idea to eat or drink anything that is stocked on the plane in Tokyo because of the radiation issues.  As Kim told me today "Don't glow when you leave Tokyo!"

Scott and I are leaving at 6 a.m. in the morning for the airport!  Though I will miss Scott and Matt, I don't know when I have ever been so excited!

Well, the trip is postponed

Yes, we have had to postpone our trip.  Jody and I thought we would be leaving tomorrow however because of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the resulting nuclear reactor issues, it just doesn't seem safe to fly through Tokyo.

My Facebook post on Wednesday night about being concerned to go through Tokyo generated a lot of comments.  One in particular from my brother George, advising me to take Potassium Iodide with me, caught my attention.  I started talking to the Kroger Pharmacy and my doctor's office about getting something to counteract radiation, should be be exposed.

Then around noon, as I was already becoming nervous, George sent me a text that I should consider cancelling because the situation was quickly getting worse.
I emailed Jody and Andy to get their input and were both in agreement that we should not put our safety at risk.  So last night I made the decision to call Delta and postpone until April 1st.  Delta did not charge any fees and as it turns out we will not only get to stay an extra day, we will be there during a time when Andy won't have to work.

The hard part is that I thought tomorrow would be the day, everything at work was arranged for my absence, and now I'm working two more weeks until we leave.

One shoe off and one shoe on...

Okay, I'm glad I didn't know about this when it happened.  Andy lost a shoe.  Unfortunately it was one of his Keen's, which he loved.

Apparently he and Evan (the roommate from Arizona) had a motorbike accident and his shoe flew off.  They searched for the shoe and even returned to the scene to search again to no avail.

So, for the past month he has been wearing a pair of Evan's flip flops.

I guess I would rather he lose a shoe than a foot!

Getting ready to go!

My Delta iphone app says 16 days until departure.  I can't believe it!

I have a lot of things to do before I go but I'm well on my way toward getting ready.  This is my checklist so far:
  • Shots and medications (partially done)
  • Haircut (done)
  • Nails
  • Shorts for Andy (found)
  • Deodorant and cologne for Andy (bought)
  • Sunscreen and bug spray (bought)
  • Copies of passport and itinerary for Scott and to put in my luggage and scan for online (done)
  • Print out Andy's address (done)
  • Get Andy and Ian's cell phone numbers
  • Call credit card companies (partially done)
I have checked into these but still have more information to get:
  • How to use my iPhone in Thailand
  • Travel apps for phone
I know I need to take summer clothes, jeans, tennis shoes, swimsuit, jacket - the normal stuff I guess.  Also books and computer for carry-on.

And I need to mentally prepare myself for a one-hour flight, followed by a 12-hour flight, followed by a 7-hour flight.  Sheesh!
